Hide Me Here

The journey back to the chapel seemed to triple in distance. The walls closed in, and Alex found it hard to get a breath in. His palms glistened as he explained what happened with Victor to his family. He was on the radar of the nefarious ruler of hell, the original evil and heaven’s reject. It scared the life out of him.

“We need to get you out of here,” said his mom.

“As soon as possible,” Uncle Nick chimed in.

“I’m not going anywhere. I won’t lie, this scares the crap out of me. But I won’t let Lucifer win, and if I leave, he’ll know I’m afraid. I can’t let the Devil get the best of me.”

“Bonzetta is right,” his gram said.

Nick and Gina stopped dead in their tracks. “Gram, you can’t be serious?”

“He’s going to be the prize for demons, dark spirits, and Lucifer for the rest of his life. If he runs now, he appears weak. If he stays and fights, he will show the Devil he’s not so easily swayed.”

“I have no words, Gram. Usually, you’re the one who’s the biggest worrier in the family. This is my son, and I’m not risking his life just to show up Lucifer.”

“Ma, I have to do this. I’ll be in greater danger if I don’t. Can’t you see? This has to happen eventually. Better now when we’re prepared for it than someday when I’m on a case and blindsided.”

Nick comforted his sister. “They have a point.”

“Not you too.” She pulled away.

“Sis, I’m all for keeping my nephew out of harm’s way. You know that. My first instinct was to rush him out of here like the Flash. But Gram and Alex make sense.”

“I can’t stay a kid forever—I gotta do this.”

“You will be a kid for eternity if this goes haywire. And if it really goes wrong, it could be in hell. We can’t save you if that happens.”

“It’s not gonna happen,” Alex commanded.

“That’s a child’s response,” his mom retorted.

“No. That’s someone who has faith in his family.”

His mom sighed. “We do this, you have to promise one thing.”

“What’s that?”

“Don’t die.”

Alex turned away and then back to his mom. He got up close and locked eyes, “I promise not to die, if you promise me the same thing.”

“Deal.”

“Good. Now that no one is dying today, maybe we should get our asses in gear and figure out a game plan.” Nick smirked.

Alex felt a few of his nerves melt away like butter on a warm slice of Italian bread. The crevices caught some of the excess and held onto it—much like the anxiety that lingered. But all in all, it was better. He drew strength from his family, and if Lucifer wanted worthy opponents, his money was with them. Never mess with a family member in an Italian family. They may have issues with one another from time to time, but when it came to outsiders, they banded together like super glue.

He checked his phone; it had been almost an hour since he left Margaret in the whimsical hands of Daphne, with no progress reported.
